Puerto Galera is 150 kilometers away from Manila on the northwestern top of Mindoro Island.  Puerto Galera has changed quite a bit since those days. Commercialism is evident -- the beach resorts, the foreign residents, the tourists, even the occasional rock concert! Scuba diving has become quite an attraction here, and it's certainly no surprise -- the place is spectacular and its undersea environs still unspoiled. And there're the occasional wrecks. Puerto Galera means "Port of Galleons" in English, and this is exactly what it was during Spanish times. Due to its naturally protected harbor, this is where the old Spanish galleons would "hide" during typhoons. Thus, there are local legends of sunken galleons, some said to be laden with their cargoes of treasure.
